© Answering the Call

As teenage girls, my best friend and I would spend hours walking around the small city we both lived in.  We were curious and daring, pushing any limit that we could – most times, not in a good way, but trying to figure out who we were.  We hung out with older crowds, went to places we didn’t belong, and stayed out late at night.

During one of our notorious runs around town, we were stopped by an elderly woman in a parking lot.  She didn’t ask why we were misbehaving or where our parents were.  In fact, she didn’t question what we were doing at all, although I suspect she already knew.  Of everything she could’ve said that day, this was the only thing on her heart:

Do you know who Jesus is?”

We both stood there for a moment almost confused, then nodded, “Yes.”

She then asked, “And do you know where you’re going when life is done?”

I shook my head, “No.”

She looked sorrowful and replied, “You should know where you’re going…

She lifted us in prayer then went on her way.  I don’t know who she was and I assume she’s long gone now, but her words have stayed with me ever since…

2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

Back then, I hadn’t realized the depth of her questions.  I had no idea what an impact it would have on me more than two decades later.  But I do know now that this moment was a perfect orchestration by God to call me and save me from the life I was living and the road I was headed on, long before I knew for myself.  And there was a reason why God made sure I would remember that conversation all these years later…

Although I wish I had understood better then, I can’t say at all that I did.  Many more years would pass as I wandered through life trying to find my way, not realizing God had revealed the way that very day.  I made a lot of mistakes, but God continued to love me and draw me near.  He never stopped revealing Himself, His power, His love to me.  Had I only known that all it took was for me to simply answer Him…

Isaiah 43:19 “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

We hear alter calls at service, and testimonies about others who are drawing closer to Christ, but as lost souls we tend to think, “That message isn’t for me…”  The truth is that it’s just as much for YOU as it is for the others who heard the call as well.  God doesn’t speak to one without speaking to the others who are present.

Truth is, the message is for you.  It wasn’t by chance that you heard those words or that you’re reading this today.  There is no coincidence in God. All His goodness is perfectly orchestrated, all His promises are just as much yours as they are for all His children, so know that this is His call for you right now.

God isn’t asking you to be perfect – He only wants that you let Him in through prayer, and take this walk with Him one day at a time… Pray to draw closer to the Lord, asking Him to open your eyes, ears and heart to Him – He’s faithful to answer if you do not give up.

Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

When the Lord pulls at your heart but you turn away from His voice, going forward in your own will and out of His, eventually you completely tune out God’s voice and His direction.  You lose sight of which way to go.  And when you find yourself lost, you start to wonder how you got there.  But when you respond to His call, your eyes will begin to open to His Holy Spirit and you will find your way in Him.

All it takes is an effort to reach out to God through prayer as if He were sitting right before you (because He is) and trusting that He hears you (because He does).  And as you move forward in knowing Him, pray for understanding and begin reading a scripture or paragraph from the New Testament, and/or online devotionals, and in time you’ll see how much your relationship with God has helped you grow and you’ll witness the evidence of blessings and change in all areas of your life!

God bless you…

PRAYER: We thank You Father for always being with us, never leaving or forsaking us. We ask You Lord, to open our hearts to Your presence; to open our ears to Your voice and no other; and to open our eyes to see things spiritually.  Help us to draw closer to You, Father God.  We bind and rebuke anything that may hinder our walk with You.  Help us to stay on right paths. Lord, do not allow us to take a step in any direction that has not been ordained by You.  Convict us when we’re wrong, encourage us when we do well, so that we may know what pleases You. We ask that Your fill us with Your Holy Spirit, so that we display Your fruits in our lives.  Help us to be who You have created us to be.  Thank You Lord that our prayers reach Your ears and You are faithful to answer! In Jesus’ mighty and precious name we pray, Amen.
