© Discernment through the Seasons

I don’t know what to do with myself,” I confessed in prayer, “There are so many thoughts running through my mind… I need direction Lord, I need to know which way You would have me go.” I prayed and prayed, but God was silent. Here, but silent.  I continued working on tasks and researching the next possible step while I patiently waited on a word from God.  As time rolled on, I almost thought I’d burst if I had to spare another moment without a sign, a word, a vision or dream.  But I refused to move without a confirmation from the Lord, so I remained faithful in prayer, adding a request for peace and grace to my petition in my need for patience; and worked at tying the ends that close the season in preparation to move forward.

Proverbs 18:15 “The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out.”

As the seasons progress, so do our needs, evolving with time and spirit.  We may begin to feel as if this job, career path, relationship, friendship, geographic area, etc. no longer suits our needs, as it provided long ago what we needed then, no longer fitting for the new season to come.  We might begin to feel pulled do more, something different, something greater than what we’re doing right now.  Not out of frustration, although that can sometimes be the cue, but rather out of necessity to fulfill our kingdom purpose, big and small.

It’s important to understand the spiritual compass given to us by the Lord, and we can only discern its true direction by growing in our relationship with God through prayer and worship, in order to hear His voice more clearly and discern His direction, His will over our lives, for the purposes we were created for in these ever-fluctuating seasons of life.  Psalm 32:8 “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you.”

Its easy to get caught up in the day to day responsibilities, so consumed by our own thoughts that we leave little room for the voice of the Holy Spirit, almost like the elevator music we’ve grown accustomed to ignoring.  Most of us have these moments at some point in our lives, and we become restless when we do.  But every good beginning starts with a word from God and that’s where we’ll find our paths bless-fully laid out before us by the hands of our beautiful Lord, the only One who can perfectly orchestrate it all!  Proverbs 3:6 (NKJV) “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

If you find yourself in a place where you’re not sure what to do – the circumstances and decisions can be endless – the greatest thing you can do for yourself is to maintain God in the center of it all.  Think:

Does this situation glorify the Lord?

Would making a change bring glory to the Lord?

Will the experience draw me closer to the Lord or farther away?

Similar thoughts, questions, and prayers can point you in the right direction. We know that something that does not bring you closer to God will inevitably pull you away. And if it pulls you away, it’s not from God.  Remember, the farther you are from our Creator, the harder and longer the struggle.  God won’t tell you to chase money or anything else of the world.  Jonah 2:8 ESV “Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love.”  But the Lord will prosper you when you’re in His will.

Don’t stress yourself to max with worry.  Worry contradicts prayer.  Pray for God to fill you with peace and comfort from His Holy Spirit. Ask the Lord to close the doors that need to close and only open those He’d have you walk through.  Pray for righteous wisdom and discernment.  Pray for confirmation, keeping your spiritual ears and eyes open as you do.  Its important to be led by the Holy Spirit, and not by everchanging emotions.   Psalm 119:133 “Guide my steps by Your word, so I will not be overcome by evil…”

Give your cares to the Lord then leave it in His hands. However, the word of God warns us against becoming idle, so don’t sit back too comfortably if you feel a pulling in your spirit to do something.  Pray, fast, and pray some more. Read the word of God.  Listen to or watch sermons.  Every moment is filled with the opportunity to pray and receive a word from God. Philippians 4:6 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

Prayer isn’t a chore and doesn’t always require endless hours set aside – our time with God is here in every moment – you can pray before stepping out of bed, in the shower, at your desk, while doing laundry, having dinner, while driving (with your eyes open of course!) before bed, in the middle of the night if you happen to wake up – matter of fact, I have received important revelations from God in the middle of the night; most times that sleepless awakening is a spiritual awakening! You can pray through any moment, and rest assured the Lord hears your cry out to Him and He is faithful to answer ♥

Deuteronomy 28:1-68 “And if you faithfully obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all His commandments that I command you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God. Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field.  Blessed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl…” Amen

Prayer:  Dear Lord, we ask You today to bring peace to our restless hearts. Open our spiritual eyes and ears to Your voice and no other.  Lead and guide us in the way to go. Close those doors that need to close and only open those You would have us walk through. Bless us with the gift of discernment.  Lead us by Your Holy Spirit, that we will not stray by the emotions of the flesh.  Equip us for our Kingdom purpose, Lord, and do not allow us to take a step in any direction You have not ordained for us, Father.  Bless us with prophetic visions and dreams that we would know without a doubt to be Your Word, and not our own.  May we bring glory to Your name in all we think, say and do.  Fill us with Your Holy Spirit that there would be no room for ourselves.  Help us to be the salt and light to others, that they too would draw closer to You and be witness of Your love and power.  Bless us that our lives would be a living testimony to Your goodness and might in every season.  May we be obedient to Your will, awakened by Your Spirit, sanctified and set apart for Your glory.  We thank You Lord for the blessing of prayer and worship, we thank You for Your love, presence and faithfulness. In Jesus’ mighty and precious name we pray, Amen.
