Let’s begin with this scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:17 “Pray without ceasing.” The scripture from 5:16-18 reads “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” God makes it very clear that He wants us to stay connected with Him at all times and to always be joyful, regardless of what things may look like at any given moment. Even when everything seems to be going well, don’t allow that to stop you from your prayer life. Don’t get too comfortable and forget what God has moved you out of. He wants to hear from you and He wants to see your heart continuously glowing with gratitude.
Praying without ceasing means to stay in prayer in all you do. Praying in faith is so important and it’s just as important to stay in prayer consistently and with appreciation. There’s never a time throughout the day when you aren’t able to pause for a moment and speak with Him – and believe He rejoices each time we do. We should be spending more time communicating with Him than being wrapped up in our thoughts. The more time you spend with Him, the more clearly you will hear His voice and know what He expects of you in every situation. What a blessing it is to have that unity with the Lord!
Colossians 4:2 “Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving.” Whether things in life are going smoothly or the times are challenging, do not allow yourself to be moved. The Lord is the One constant thing in our lives and we should want to be consistent with Him as well. Praying without ceasing keeps your heart and your focus on God rather than in the world; it keeps hope alive and your faith strong and it’s our reminder that “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” Philippians 4:13.
It helps to know that prayer is also a preventative. That doesn’t mean our spirits won’t be tested, as all trials are encouragement for the growth of our spirits – we learn more by facing mountains and moving them, than we do by sitting on top of them. As a preventative, it’s important to arm yourself with God’s word through reading the bible (of course praying for revelation before, during and after reading.) Having this armor while in constant prayer prepares you for any attempted attack from the enemy. The enemy will flee from the righteous and the righteous tend to be warriors in prayer. “So humble yourselves before God. Resist the enemy and it will flee from you” James 4:7.
When you stay constant in prayer you become more aware of the Spirit and the needs of the Spirit, then suddenly the things of the world become so small; you begin to see life through your spiritual eyes rather than carnal ones. You worry less and have more confidence. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” Philippians 4:6-7. Thank You, Jesus!
As you maintain yourself in the Spirit, God will provide all else. Matthew 6:33 “Seek ye first the Kingdom of the Lord and all things will be added unto you.” I have to admit this is one of my many favorite scriptures; this particular one is straight to the point of what we need to do steadily, on a daily basis. Seek Him first, before all things, and He will cover you in blessings. With a promise like this, who would want to stand alone?
Understand that our God, the only one true and living God, is a powerful God, a loving God. Know and be comfortable in knowing that all things are in His control and all things are for your benefit. With that being said, realize the greatest gift in all the world is prayer – being able to reach out to God at any time, for any reason. Use this precious gift and watch how He transforms your life. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2
Prayer: My Lord, I thank You for being my refuge, my joy, my strength and my shield. I pray to never forget the value of communication with You. I pray my heart will stay open to Your Spirit, my eyes will stay focused on You, and the only voice my ears will hear is Yours. My Lord, if there is anything that acts as a barrier to my prayer life, I ask You to reveal it and help me push past the mound. I vow to seek You wholeheartedly in every moment, and should I become distracted, redirect my focus to You. I trust and know Your hands upon my life and I thank You. (Share your personal appreciation and petitions.) In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
