John 14:14 “If you ask anything in My name, I will do it”

What does this scripture mean to you? Most take it exactly for what it says but don’t realize the deepest roots of its meaning.  Admittedly, I was one of them.  But then the Lord brought this to my attention and revealed to me that there is much more than simply asking.  Yes, the Lord hears our prayers and answers many of them, regardless of how young or mature we are in the Spirit, (thank You, Jesus!)

The Lord truly does mean everything He says.  However, as we advance in the Spirit, there is much more to understand in all scripture.  This must be where I am and if you’re reading this then there must be something here for you as well.  But before I begin I would like to back up just a bit and present the entire passage along with a few other scriptures:

John chapter 14:12-14  12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.  13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”

John 15:7 “If you abide in Me and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire and it shall be done for you.” NKJV

Looking at John 14:12-14 you can clearly see the Lord says that we have power in Him.  He also tells us if we believe in Him and the glorious power He has, if we have faith in these things, our prayers will be answered.  Considering this, look at John 15:7 you see the Lord says, “If you abide in Me and My Words in you”, (abide:  to act in accord with;  to submit to;  to keep;  agree to;  to remain steadfast or faithful to).  These scriptures are telling us not only to live by His Word but to have the Word living within us.  What is the Word? It must be more than just a word to live within us.

John 1:1 NKJV “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

The Word IS God.  And if the Word was with God, then the Word is also Jesus.  Jesus has been with God since the very beginning because He is of God, taken from the very Spirit of God – God Himself in the form of man.  When Jesus ascended, God sent His advocate the Holy Spirit, again, a very part of God’s Spirit, to be with us, direct us, reveal to us and intercede on our behalf when we don’t know what to pray (Romans 8:26).  The Trinity, each their own, yet one in the same.  The Trinity.

Now, if the Word is God and of God, and Jesus says “if you abide in Me and My Words abide in you” then this must mean receiving the Holy Spirit of the Lord. Not just the Holy Spirit being with us or upon but rather living within us. It’s important to know that our bodies, our temples are not our own (1Corinthians 6:19). Once we realize and accept this, it becomes much easier to act and live in the Spirit – at this point you can accept the Lord’s Holy Spirit to dwell within you. Luke 4:18(a) “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me…”    This is how we receive conviction when we are wrong, direction when we are turned and revelation when we don’t know.

Looking closely you see all of these scriptures actually tell us that we must decrease in ourselves (die the flesh) and increase in Him (live in the Spirit). They also tell us our hearts must be aligned with the Lord’s. In order for our hearts to align with His, we must accept the Holy Spirit’s guidance and pray for righteous wisdom. When we are willing to do this, the desires of our hearts are no longer desires of the world, but rather spiritual desires. The desires of our hearts become those that the Lord desires for us, rather than what we use to desire for ourselves.  It becomes easier to understand this when you read the following scripture:

James 4:3 NKJV “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.”  James 4:3 ESV “When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures”

This scripture shows us that when we ask with the wrong intentions or ask out of self-gratification, those are worldly desires that will do nothing to feed your soul.  The Lord’s greatest concern is to give you what your spirit needs. We should be seeking those things that will elevate us spiritually, rather than temporal things that fade away.  Yes, we have needs for living while we’re here on earth, but the Lord will take care of those needs as we seek Him (Matthew 6:33.) This is the kind of revelation that thrusts us forward spiritually.

Don’t be fooled by the things that others own – most times the Lord is trying to show how He provides for us, and all for His glory; but other times the enemy will try to manipulate in order to pull someone away from the Lord, encouraging them to think they have done all these things on their own, rather than giving God all the praise and honor.

Sometimes, it may seem we don’t see the answers to our prayers but this is simply because it’s either not (yet) on His timing and/or what we are asking for is not in line with what the Lord’s heart desires for us, what He knows is best. Wouldn’t it be helpful if we could have some idea of what the Lord wants for us rather than thinking we already know? I’m a strong believer that God is always speaking to us, guiding us in all things, as I see His direction daily and many times hear his voice speaking to me directly.  The closer you are to the Lord, the more clearly you’ll see and hear His responses, His leading.

We align our hearts with the Lord’s by reading the Word daily (and praying for guidance, revelation and righteous wisdom). The Lord is generous and He will answer these calls from your heart.  While reading and praying deeply, we strengthen our connection with the Lord. If you pay close attention, you’ll see His Word around you and you’ll know what He’s telling you. If you still find yourself asking questions, He’s waiting for you to focus in the Spirit, stop thinking that you know, and just listen for Him.  Be patient and rest.

I don’t believe any prayer goes unanswered but rather it’s a redirection into what will take us where we need to grow.  We’ll clearly see how his plans are better than ours, making us grateful for those prayers that may have only seemed to be unanswered, yet actually answered in a more perfect way than own thoughts could’ve understood in those moments.

Prayer: My Lord, I pray that the desires of my heart are the desires of Your heart for my life and my purpose. I pray if there is anything in my heart that is not of You, that You will remove those things and replace them with what does belong.  I pray that all I think, say and do will be of You and not of me.  I pray the only voice I hear will be Yours, the only leading I take will be from You.  I pray everything I am glorifies Your name and brings You honor.  I pray to decrease in myself and increase in You.

Father God, guide me into living a life that is pleasing to You. Mold me as I seek You.  I pray You will reveal my purpose to me and I would recognize Your perfect orchestration. I pray I will continuously pursue You and Your plans for me, without reluctance, never fearing, but having faith and trust in You knowing that Your plans for me are far greater than my own. In Jesus’s beautiful and powerful I name, Amen*
