Jesus said: “Love your enemies. For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them” (Luke 6:32 & 35).

Long ago, I was going through season after season of trial. I was so confused, and stressed to the max.  I lost my job, my house, my car broke down, and I was at the end of my rope trying to make things better but seeing no results.  I couldn’t figure out why any of it was happening, but I knew in my spirit that there was something I was missing…

Then the nightmares began, and continued every night.  I could barely sleep at all and honestly I didn’t want to.  I knew if I slept I would have more nightmares, but I was so tired that all I wanted to do was get some rest.   This went on for weeks… Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore and I knew I needed God to help me but I didn’t know how to reach Him.

That’s when I remembered the neighbor.  From time to time she’d stop by for a minute or two and chat with the women I was staying with, or drop off a bag of oranges for no reason.  Although her stops were always brief, she would mention God and the church, “I’m on my way to church” and “Thank You, Lord Jesus.”  I didn’t know how to find God but I knew she had to know something.

After one more sleepless night, I had enough and was determined to talked to her. I looked out my bedroom window toward her house every few minutes for the next several hours waiting to see her pick-up-truck pull into her driveway, hoping I could catch her before she went inside.  When I finally saw her, I ran out as fast as I could, most likely looking and sounding a mess, and I said:

“I’m sorry – I know you don’t really know me, but I’m your neighbor and I need to tell you something because I know you go to church.”  I told her about the awful nightmares I was having and shared an additional thing or two.  She was genuinely concerned and invited me to take a ride to church with her, and so I went.  This was the beginning of my salvation and freedom from bondage.

I hadn’t shared anything with the woman  whose home I was in, but I was willing to share this “secret” with someone I didn’t even know.  Why? Because she revealed herself as a child of God.  Had she never mentioned her church or love for Christ, I might have never known who to go to, or what to do, and it’s likely I wouldn’t have been alive to tell you this now.

1 Corinthians 12:27 “Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.”

We are to be the image of Christ.  We are His hands and feet. We are the salt and light of the earth.

But if we don’t live it, breathe it, show it in the way we speak to one another, the way we carry ourselves, the way we express love to strangers, are we really being the image of Christ?  We never really know what someone is going through.  Pain doesn’t always show past a smile…

If someone hadn’t had the courage to share the love of Christ with you, where would you be today?

Something to consider  as you go about your day and cross paths with others – remember, there is no coincidence in God.  Every moment is an opportunity to show Christ to someone who may not know Him – the image can many times mean so much more than words…

PRAYER: Father God, thank You for calling us and choosing us as Your own.  It’s truly the greatest honor to serve You by serving others.  As we thank You for our salvation today, we also thank You for blessing us with the opportunity to share this gospel of life with others.  We pray that You would bless us with the courage and grace to speak to those we do not know, so that they too can find salvation in You.  We ask that You would speak for us and through us as we reach out to others. We pray our words would not be our own, but would come from You, Lord. Thank You Father for our God-given gifts of ministry and the blessing of Your Saving Grace. In Jesus’ mighty and precious name we pray, Amen.
