The scripture that draws me today is “A man’s stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit of his mouth; from the produce of his lips he shall be filled. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit” Proverbs 18:20-21. If you consider the meaning behind this scripture, it’s amazing to know that we have the power to speak life and death, to speak things into existence or extinction. If you could see the evidence of it right away, would you be more careful with your words?
The Lord tells us we’re made in His image, Genesis 1:27 “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them” so if our Lord has the ability to speak things into existence, then we do as well. Of course not the extent He does, as in creating an entire world in a matter of moments, but we do indeed have the power to cause things to become or to cease. Not enough of us take this scripture with all seriousness, but we should and we must.
When I was still living in the “world” I hadn’t understood what this scripture really meant – I took it very lightly. Matter of fact, I hadn’t thought about it much at all. Now when I look back on that life, I can clearly see where my tongue spoke negativity into my life and actually cycling the adversity I was trying to get away from simply by speaking situations upon myself and I’m sure upon others as well. Ouch.
How often have you found yourself say or even thinking things such as, “That person is so difficult to deal with” or “Why does this always happen to me?” or “I’m not capable of doing something as great as that” or “I think I’m getting sick” and many other negative expressions? In fact, those very things are being called like a magnet to your life, through your very own tongue, believe it or not. Not only are you calling those things into existence, but speaking them is also encouraging you to believe in them. James 3:10 “And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right.”
Family, friends, coworkers and my children come to mind when I think about the power of the tongue. Sometimes we see others around us do or say things we’d rather they didn’t, whether they’re minors or adults. From something as simple as slacking on homework or home responsibilities, not-so-good habits, or a seeming character flaw that we may mentally project into something worse. We may see potential issues at work or in a personal relationship, or possible obstacles in the way of goals we’re aspiring to reach. At times we may adamantly profess it to ourselves or vent it out with someone else.
However, when those words or thoughts are expressed, we’re encouraging its existence and inspiring the enemy to manipulate the situation. So if those thoughts come to mind or are coming out of your mouth immediately bind & rebuke it, in Jesus’ name. Begin speaking great things upon your children, yourself, your loved ones, friends, work, your car, school – about everything: health, character traits, income, condition, etc. Ephesians 4:29 “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” And this scripture includes yourself and your life as well.
The enemy encourages feelings and thoughts of adversity; it’s waiting to hear you speak upon those things in order to give the illusion of chaos and destruction so that you can believe in the negativity, attempting to rob you of hope. Don’t give the enemy what it wants – don’t allow it to make you anxious of tomorrow rather than eager for daily blessings. Use the gifts the Lord has given you to speak life into everyone and everything around you. James 3:2 “Indeed, we all make many mistakes; For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.” It starts here.
Speaking life comes from our Lord but speaking death comes from the enemy. A disciplined person can discern from a spiritually unhealthy choice to a spiritually beneficial one. We make the choice to either focus on the Lord’s Promises or the enemy’s lies. You can choose to take the Lord’s lead or allow the enemy to misdirect you. John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the fullest.”
Begin to declare all those wonderful things you want to see in your life: prosperity, health, patience, motivation, kindness, etc. Declare all the best for everyone around you. “I am or s/he is proactive and progressive.” “I am or s/he is respectful and responsible.” “The Lord is moving on our behalf – I will not worry.” “I’m healthy and feel wonderful today. By His stripes I am healed.” Anoint everything and everyone around you. Speak greatness and take all these things into prayer daily. Chains and strongholds will break and the Lord’s blessings will flow.
Isaiah 55:11 “So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”
God bless you!
Prayer: My Lord, first and foremost I want to thank You for Your blessings, all the things I recognize easily as well as those things that may not be immediately revealed. I know that You have overcome the world for us and I thank You for Your saving grace! I thank You for blessing me with the gift of the power of the tongue, and the revelation that I have the ability to speak life into everyone and everything around me. I vow to always use my thoughts, words and actions for the good of those you have placed in my life, if for a moment or a lifetime. I vow to speak Your blessings over my life daily and through any circumstance. Lord, if I begin to think, say or do anything that contradicts Your Words and Promises, please help me to take immediate notice and redirect my thoughts to Your Word. May Your Holy Spirit intercede on my behalf, speaking for me and through me so that others may know Your love and grace. Allow my life to be proof of Your love and to be given as an offering to You, in an attempt to show You my gratitude. I love You, Father. Thank You. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
