© Worldly vs Holy

The moment we accept Jesus Christ into our hearts we have become Christians. But there’s a difference between calling yourself a Christian and being Christlike. Jesus called for us to be like Him. He set forth the example of what holiness looks like and gave us clear examples on what worldliness is. Anything that is not of God is of the world, and the line drawn between the two is very distinct with no neutral ground.

Romans 12:2 (NIV) “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.”

The opposite of being worldly is being holy. When we become new creations in Christ it is because of the work of the Holy Spirit within us. Accepting Jesus as your Savior is just the first step. Even the enemy itself knows that God exists. Therefore, we must begin to strive to be more than what the world tells us to be. We have to learn how to accept the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives and that takes intentional actions on our part. We have to want to be separated from the things of the world and discover our identity in Christ, to know who we are in Him so that we can defeat the lies the enemy has been feeding the world since the beginning of time.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV) “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

Being worldly is a state of mind complete with habits and false beliefs. Being holy is a state of the spirit, a spiritual occurrence that can only come through seeking the face of the Lord, seeking to love Him and to please Him, to be closer to Him, to want to become who He has created us to be. This takes our diligent prayers, making the time to commune with the Lord, to speak with Him and to listen out for His voice, recognizing Him in your life, and wanting to feel His presence all around you.

We have to want to know the nature of the Lord and we can only find this through our time with Him. Worship is an important act of sacrifice and obedience for the Lord. The definition of Worship means to attribute worth, to know and understand the worthiness of God, to have reverence for God (complete and pure respect and love for Him.) It means to understand His value in our lives and to love Him for it.

This is the opposite of worldly and is the meaning of what it is to seek holiness. This means to be sanctified and set apart. Sanctified means to be declared as holy, consecrated, made legitimate, free from sin, purified, to be cleansed of the influence of the world so that the world no longer has power over you. The Word of God tells us that the enemy is the ruler of the world, and there are traits that come from the influence of darkness. Some of those traits are pride and anger. God cannot work within a spirit of pride or uncontrolled anger. You must be willing to surrender yourself and your life, your desires and your habits, to the power of the Holy Spirit so that you can be sanctified and set apart from the world and become Christlike.

2 Timothy 2:21 ESV “Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the Master of the house, ready for every good work.”

To be worldly is to live within the confines of the world with little to no desire to be holy. To be worldly is to be more comfortable in the setting of the world than to be in the presence of holiness. This means you’re comfortable living outside of fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ, are comfortable not being a part of the church as a people, comfortable listening to worldly music with no desire to absorb yourself in praise and worship which is the music of heaven, comfortable in environments full of sin, comfortable with the lies of the enemy that are within the world.

To be worldly is to be comfortable with worldly friends, to be comfortable living in sin, to think yourself better than your brothers and sisters, to be prideful and full of wrath, or even just being content without seeking more of God. Pride or anger are telltale signs of the influence of darkness in your life. This doesn’t mean that you can’t overcome the powers of darkness, but it does mean that you must have a desire to overcome and be victorious in your walk of faith. We will not be perfect but if you think you are just fine being who you are without the help of the Holy Spirit then you are under the influence of the deceiver. That is what it means to be worldly and far from what it means to be holy.

1 Peter 1:14-16 ESV As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

Hebrews 12:14 ESV “Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.”

If you desire to be holy and not worldly then you must first seek to love and honor God in every area of your life, to love your neighbor as you would yourself, to serve others without any expectation of return, to be a good steward to those the Lord has set before you such as your spouse and to be a good steward over the blessings within your household, to abstain from sin through the power of prayer, and most of all to set out to be the image of Christ to others, starting within your private life at home and carrying it into your public service. Prayer and worship are mighty sources of power in our lives. It will the stir the Holy Spirit to move within you and within your environment, and bring about the changes which the Lord has set you apart for! Amen, God bless you!

1 John 3:6-10 ESV “No one who abides in Him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen Him or known Him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as He is righteous. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.”

Prayer:

Father God, bless me with a Christlike heart and mind. Fill me with your Holy Spirit so that I would be sanctified and set apart for Your honor and glory. Let me not think myself better than my brothers and sisters but to strive to be Christlike, to be the salt and light to others, to be the image of Christ to those who are around me.

I bind and rebuke the influence of the enemy from residing anywhere in my life. No weapon formed against me shall prosper, in the mighty name of Jesus. I cancel out any assignment the enemy has set out against me, in the mighty name of Jesus. I declare victory over every situation and circumstance in my life.

I declare the power of the Holy Spirit within me and around me. Lord, send your Holy Spirit to sweep through my home and dwell here with us. Cleanse my heart of any hidden faults, that the meditations of my heart would be pleasing to You, Father God. Lead and guide me Lord onto paths of righteousness and illuminate any dark places in my life so my life would be filled with the power of Your holiness and goodness.

Help me to see all things through spiritual eyes and to love others as You love them. Help me to be a good steward of all the blessings in my life and make me to be the gentleness and kindness that You desire me to be toward others. Help me to draw closer to You with each day.  I thank You in advance for the good work You are doing within me.  In Jesus’ mighty and precious name I pray, Amen.
